Congressman Williams addresses community

August 19, 2015

Congressman Roger Williams-who represents Stephenville, Erath County and the rest of the 25th District in the U.S. House of Representatives-spoke to Stephenville officials and folks from the business community Wednesday morning at the Chapel on the Bosque on the museum grounds.
July Danley, president and CEO of the Stephenville Chamber of Commerce introduced Williams, saying, "On behalf of the Chamber we're excited to welcome Congressman Williams who represents the 25th District that includes Stephenville and Erath County. He is former Secretary of State for the great state of Texas and is a current small business owner.
"He has made it his goal to champion the needs of businesses, being the voice of businesses in Stephenville we are excited that he's here to share a little bit about what's going on in Washington D.C., how that affects us here in Stephenville, and to answer some of your questions."
Williams took the stage, "We ran on a pro-business, entrepreneurial message, creating jobs and I try to stay focused on that because really, that's what I do best."
He says where he stands is easy to understand, "Politically I have a pretty simple platform: Lower taxes, less government, cut spending, defend the borders, listen to your generals, understand the 10th Amendment [known as the "rights reserved for the states or people" amendment] and always stand with Israel.
"That's where we've been the last two terms and we've never gotten away from that," he said.
"I'm a Main Street guy, I'm like all of you; I'm not a Wall Street guy. Wall Street's doing fantastic and I'm glad. That's great."
He added, "But I can tell you Main Street America is still hurting. And in Texas we have the greatest economy in America; we do a really good job. But it could be so much better if we could turn this economy around."
Williams then said, "We've tried zero percent interest and I think all of us agree it's not working very well. We've tried stimulus; it's not working very well. And frankly, we've tried socialism and it's not working in America.
"So I focus on putting these people to work again. We've got to get unemployment down to a real five percent, not a phony five percent," he explained. "If we get there and get to a three or four percent growth in America, which we've been to, then we've got our economy going again."
Williams said he believed that the greatest asset America has is not America – it's Americans.
"It's all of us-it's small business owners, it's moms and dads, it's grandpas and grandmas willing to take risks and willing to receive the rewards. That's what America is all about."
Williams will continue touring his district following his Stephenville visit.
