Roger Williams Statement on Immigration Amicus Brief

May 14, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Roger Williams (R-Texas) released the following statement after signing an amicus brief filed with the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals that supports a Texas federal judge's injunction against President Obama's executive action on immigration.

"Time and again we heard President Obama say he does not have the authority to grant amnesty when that is exactly what he is attempting to do," said Williams. "Whether he likes it or not, this president must learn that he is not above the Constitution and that he is the enforcer of the law, not the creator. As a former constitutional law professor, you would think he would get that."

In the amicus brief, signed by 88 Representatives and 25 Senators, the Members of Congress write:

"The Constitution vested in Congress the exclusive authority to make law and set immigration policies…The Government also exceeded the bounds of its prosecutorial discretion and abdicated its duty to faithfully execute the law."

Earlier this year, Williams wrote a column, Obama Must Enforce Immigration Law, Not Create It, in which he argued that the president is rewarding lawbreakers rather than encouraging legal immigration to increase America's competitiveness in a global economy.
