Williams reacts to IG report on problematic VA claims processing
Today, U.S. Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25) responded to a report revealing Department of Veteran Affairs Regional Offices (VAROs) did not accurately process 40 percent of the disability claims it received, including claims dealing with traumatic brain injuries. The report cites ineffective training and inexperienced staff among reasons for its poor performance. According to the report, problems with Waco’s VARO processing errors have worsened.
“It is completely unacceptable for the VA to continue operating with such inaccuracy and inefficiency. Our nation’s veterans deserve better than this subpar service, and it’s well past time for the VA to get to the bottom of its many problems.”
Earlier this year, Williams sent a letter to VA Secretary Eric Shinseki demanding action on the staggering backlog of unresolved and unprocessed veteran claims nationwide. The average wait time for veterans who file a claim at the Waco VARO is 440 days, or 150 days longer than the national average. VA officials still say the backlog will be eliminated by 2015.
“Veterans don’t have other options when it comes to medical care. Just as they honored their commitment to serve and protect us, we must honor our commitment to providing them with the appropriate care and treatment they deserve. Anything less is a shameful disservice to our veterans.”
