Rep. Williams Votes Against Democrats’ Abuse of Power
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Roger Williams (R-TX-25) today released the following statement after voting against the Democrats’ rules package:
“Speaker Pelosi begins this new Congress with a partisan rules package that discards 200 years of precedent in order to appease the radical left and diminish the voices of Republican Members. Democrats gutted the Motion to Recommit, a key safeguard that ensures the voices of the minority party can be heard, which is critically important when the Speaker determines what bills will receive a vote. Democrats have also decided to deem terms like ‘father’ and ‘mother’ as harmful in a shameful attempt at virtue signaling through legislation. In addition, Speaker Pelosi has taken away the budgetary constraints that ensure politicians are good stewards of taxpayer dollars by eliminating the Pay-Go rules that prevent lawmakers from passing radical new proposals without any way to pay for them. This gives the socialist wing of the Democratic party free rein to pass the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and other partisan legislation that will strip Texans of their healthcare freedom and destroy our state’s economy, all the while passing on the cost to the next generation.
“In an affront to every constituent I represent, Speaker Pelosi continues the unlawful practice of allowing Members to vote by proxy. While the American people were told that this practice would only be used in extreme circumstances when members of Congress cannot travel to Washington to vote for health reasons, Democrats continue to abuse this measure and use it as an excuse to not show up to work. While millions of Americans across the country show up to work every day despite a once-in-a-generation public health crisis, Democrats handed their constituents’ vote in the House to Speaker Pelosi. The Democrats’ rules package is an abuse of power and nothing short of a dereliction of duty. I will oppose these rules and the damage they will inflict on the People’s House.”
