Come and Read It Report

Dear Friends,

We are close, we are very close! And I am more excited than ever to pass this tax relief bill for hard-working Americans and their families. When I was elected to Congress in 2012, I made a promise to reform our current tax system, and I am more than hopeful that we will deliver on that promise by Christmas. Here are some key highlights that I'd like you to be aware of:

Tax Reform

Last week, the Senate voted on, and passed, their version of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. It was absolutely imperative to have both Chambers of Congress pass pro-growth tax reform packages, and I am looking forward to conferencing the two bills so we can create a single bill that is fairer, flatter and simpler for all Americans. You can find my full statement here. Also, I recently discussed tax reform on Fox Business News' Mornings with Maria - you can click here to watch.

The Strengthening Oversight of Iran's Access to Finance Act

Reinforcing our nation's security has always been a top priority of mine, which is why I introduced H.R. 4324, the Strengthening Oversight of Iran's Access to Finance Act, that passed out of the House Financial Services Committee three weeks ago. I commend Senator Cruz and Senator Perdue for putting the welfare of our nation on the frontlines by introducing my bill to the Senate this last week. This sensible legislation will promote the increased safety between the United States and Iran, and I encourage both Chambers of Congress to vote on this bill in a timely manner so we can get it to the President's desk. You can find my full statement here.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Update

Last week, President Trump appointed OMB Director Mick Mulvaney to serve as acting director of the CFPB. It was immediately challenged by deputy director Leandra English, but was denied. I applaud U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly's commitment to the Constitution by allowing Director Mulvaney to remain acting director. Former Director Richard Cordray's final move to attempt to appoint Deputy Director English is a prime example of how corrupt this agency is. Democrats want the Obama-era CFPB to act as a fourth branch of government that they control, where they can reward their friends and punish their enemies. I look forward to dismantling this unconstitutional bureau quickly under the supervision of my friend, Mick.

Legislative Update

Last week: In addition to voting on 14 legislative items, I co-sponsored H.R. 4274, H.R. 2327, H.R. 4494, H. Res. 630, H. Res. 576.

The Financial Services Committee held two subcommittee hearings that I participated in last week. If you missed them, you can find them here and here. This week, the Committee has two bills up for a vote on the House floor: H.R. 3971, the Community Institution Mortgage Relief Act, that I am a co-sponsor of, and H.R. 477.

Additionally, this week we'll also vote on H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, that I am a co-sponsor of. This commonsense legislation prioritizes the rights of law-abiding citizens to concealed carry and the ability to travel freely between states without worry about conflicting state codes.

It is an honor and privilege to represent the people of Texas' 25th Congressional District and as always, please reach out to me with any issues and concerns that are important to you.

In God we trust,
