Cleburne Times Review: Congressman Roger Williams sworn into office
By: Matt Smith
House Speaker John Boehner officially swore in Johnson County’s new Congressman Roger Williams on Thursday on the floor of the House of Representatives.
Williams represents the newly redrawn Congressional District 25, which includes Johnson County. CD-17 U.S. Rep. Bill Flores, R-Bryan, formerly represented Johnson County. Redistricting, as required by population growth reflected in 2010 Census data, moved Johnson County from CD-17 to CD-25.
Williams emerged victorious from a Republican primary that included 11 challengers, including former Cleburne Mayor Justin Hewlett. He went on to defeat Democratic opponent Elaine Henderson in November’s general election.
“I am proud to take the oath of office and am ready to get to work putting America back to work,” Williams said after the ceremony. “During the campaign, I promised to fight for lower taxes, less spending and smaller government. And that’s exactly what I am going to do starting today. I know that we can’t tax or spend our way to prosperity. We must lower taxes and control spending so that small business can lead the recovery.”
Williams was also appointed to the House Budget Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and vowed to use his committees to get results for CD-25.
“As a business owner, I know what it takes to balance a budget, and it’s time for the federal government to do the same,” Williams said. “I also know how important infrastructure is for our economy. I am eager to begin working with my colleagues on finding real solutions to the challenges facing our district, our state and our country.”
