Cleburne Times-Review: Williams visits supporters at Burleson chamber
By: John Austin
If newly elected U.S. Rep. Roger Williams, R-Austin, has his way, the 113th Congress will trim the executive branch so severely that Presidend Barack Obama will be flying commercial.
The line got a laugh at a Friday morning meet-and-greet at the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce, where the newly elected congressman for the 25th District told about 40 supporters that they’d be seeing a lot more of him during his first term.
Burleson Mayor Ken Shetter joked that Williams has recently visited in Burleson so often that he feared Williams might run for mayor.
Williams’ face is indeed a familiar sight in Johnson County. Earlier this month, he spoke at a Cleburne Chamber of Commerce meet-and-greet.
He has, however, spent enough time in Washington, D.C., since becoming a freshman congressman to have begun promoting the pro-business, small-government agenda he campaigned on.
“I’m a retail guy,” Williams said. “We have a trillion dollar deficit. We need to cut a trillion dollars.”
True to his word, Williams on Jan. 4 voted against allowing FEMA to borrow money to carry out the National Flood Insurance Program in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, according to his website. The president signed the measure on Jan. 6.
Reminding supporters that he, like many of them, is a businessman with payrolls to meet, Williams spent about an hour in the room.
Williams promised to make sure that the president, whom he dubbed a socialist during his congressional campaign, would not gut the Second Amendment and take away Americans’ guns.
“We’ve got to keep our schools safe, our malls safe,” he said. “We’ve got to make sure the guns get in the hands of the good guys.”
He advocated drilling for oil on government lands and said he wants to reallocate American troops.
