Congressman honors oldest living veteran with flag
AUSTIN -- The oldest living U.S. veteran was honored on Wednesday with the presentation of an American flag that has been flown over the U.S. Capitol.
Congressman Roger Williams (R-Texas) will present 108-year-old Richard Overton with the flag at a ceremony on Wednesday. Williams will also congratulate Overton on receiving a new roof donated by Lon Smith Roofing.
"I'm really surprised, I appreciate every bit. I pray to God that they do live a long time and do it again for somebody else. Not only me, do it for somebody else, too," said Overton.
Overton lives in the same house he purchased when he returned to Austin after his service in World War II. Overton joined the military in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater as part of the 1887th Engineer Aviation Battalion.
"I cannot think of anyone more deserving to receive this donation than Mr. Overton," Williams said in a statement. "He is an inspiration to me and his positive attitude and optimistic look on life are contagious. He is a model American, and this event will be the community's way of thanking this national hero for remaining a true Austinite."et the recognition they deserve."
