Killeen ISD thanks Texas representative for proposed school safety legislation

March 20, 2018

KILLEEN, TEXAS - The Killeen Independent School District is thanking Texas Congressman Roger Williams for proposing legislation calling for the U.S. Department of Education to provide grants for school districts to improve school safety.

Williams is a Republican representing the 25th Congressional District in Texas, and proposed House Resolution 5107 on February 27, calling for lawmakers to express a "sense of the Congress that the top priority of the Department of Education should be to keep American children safe in schools." The resolution is co-sponsored by Texas Representative Pete Olson, and has been assigned to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce for consideration.

The "sense of the Congress" resolution would direct the Secretary of Education to "carry out a grant program to secure elementary schools and secondary schools." Under the resolution, the Secretary of Education would award grants to local school districts to make school security improvements identified as needed by an independent security assessment.

Killeen ISD Superintendent John Craft says, "The Killeen Independent School District is fortunate, and remains appreciative, to have the support of Congressman Roger Williams. His proposed H.R. 5107 is an example of his leadership and wisdom when it comes to important matters impacting the future of our youth."
