Thank you Congressman Williams

September 16, 2015

Recently, I had the privilege of hearing our congressman, Roger Williams, address a sold out crowd at the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce quarterly luncheon. He talked talk about his plan to get America back on track. As the congressman outlined his plan, I couldn't help but remember some earlier meetings with him.

Over a decade ago, I had the privilege of talking to him in his office in Weatherford about business and the American landscape. I saw pictures of him with presidents and American leaders, yet he took the time to share his thoughts about business and life with a complete stranger. I had no idea that our paths would cross a decade later.

When the worst natural disaster to hit Cleburne was barely outside our city limits, Roger Williams was on the ground ready to call in any assistance we needed. While he allowed our local people to take the lead, he had the full weight of the federal government ready to help if needed.

As we talked to a storm victims, we learned about the difficulty one of our residents was having with his out-of-state insurance adjuster. The congressman asked to borrow my phone and he called the adjuster and got our resident the help he needed. His compassion was coupled with action.

As my memories returned to the packed room, I heard Roger lay out a straightforward, common-sense plan that he calls "Jumpstart America." His plan calls for simplification of the tax code that cuts personal tax brackets across the board, and incentivizes businesses to repatriate investments currently held overseas. It includes cutting the tax and regulatory burdens that stifles small businesses and kills creation of new jobs. While the federal government has tried stimulus packages and government programs, neither made the difference unleashing the power of the private sector can make.

When you see pictures of the congressman's Washington office, you might notice a painting celebrating the tornado recovery hanging on his wall. When I see it, I am reminded that we have a leader who understands the big picture, yet doesn't forget the individuals he represents. So although the standing room only crowd spoke volumes, I want to publicly thank our congressman Roger Williams for representing our community and for fighting for a bright future for America.
