Dear Friends,
With Thanksgiving coming up this week, it is a time to reflect on, and be thankful for everything in our lives. This last year has shown me how precious life can be, and I owe that to Capitol Police Officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey. I am thankful to serve as the representative for the greatest district, in the greatest state, in the greatest nation in the world. It is an honor serving the people of the Texas-25th, and I am looking forward to continuing to fight for issues that are important to all of you.
Tax Reform
On Thursday, we took advantage of an opportunity to pass a tax plan that is pro-family and pro-growth for all Americans. This historic overhaul will benefit taxpayers for generations to come by allowing them to put more of their hard earned money back into their pockets. America needs a 21st century tax code for the 21st century family, and now is the time to deliver what we promised: a fairer and simpler tax code that will jumpstart this economy. I urge the Senate to vote on tax reform immediately so we can get this to the President's desk before the end of the year. America need tax cuts, and we must not let them down. Flood Insurance
Almost three months after the most catastrophic flood hit our home state of Texas, I am proud to have passed a reform and reauthorization for the NFIP. This reform package includes seven bills the Financial Services Committee passed in June that will increase private market competition and provide affordable coverage for policyholders. For far too long, hard-working American taxpayers have been trapped in a never-ending bailout-cycle for the NFIP, and $30 billion later, they are finally getting the relief they deserve. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018
Last year, we made a promise to keep Americans safe by equipping our military with the tools they need to be the most powerful fighting force the world has ever seen. I am proud to have served on the NDAA Conference Committee to create a package that will authorize funding to do just that. This NDAA will directly impact the armed forces in Central Texas, and around the nation, by giving them a much-deserved pay increase, and strengthening the homeland by ensuring military readiness. This legislation provides the necessary funding and resources that our men and women in uniform need, and I look forward to President Trump signing this bill into law as quickly as possible. Legislative Update
Last week: In addition to voting on 14 legislative items, I also co-sponsored H.R. 4247, the HERO Act.
The Financial Services Committee held a two-day markup where we voted on and passed 22 bills that will now head to the House floor. Included in those 22 bills was a bill I introduced, H.R. 4324, the Strengthening Oversight of Iran's Access to Finance Act. National security is of the utmost importance and I was proud to sponsor a bill to increase congressional oversight on aircraft sales authorized by the U.S. Treasury Department to Iran.
