It was a tremendous privilege today to present Filipino World War II veteran Jose Monzano Somera with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award bestowed by Congress on a civilian. Mr. Somera served from 1944-1946 with units of the U.S. Army Forces in the Far East against Japanese Imperial Forces, and enlisted in the Philippine Scouts, a regular Army unit, from August 1946 until April 1949. He later became a U.S. citizen in the 1950s.

In 2015, Congress unanimously passed, and I was proud to support, the Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act to collectively award the medal to Filipino veterans of WWII in honor of their dedicated service. This recognition was long overdue, and was awarded to the quarter of a million Filipinos who fought side by side with American soldiers. When our world needed it most, Mr. Somero and his fellow soldiers answered the call to help make our nation the safest and most prosperous on earth.

Celebrating our workforce

Workforce development is an integral part of our society and prepares people for jobs that will hold well into their future, which in turn strengthens our community. It was an honor to present the Workforce Solutions Awards to the employees and employers in the Central Texas Workforce Region, who know that our greatest assets in America are our workers and it is essential we invest in them however we can.

Political theater

Impeachment is a monumental step that must be conducted with full transparency – but what we are witnessing by the Democrats is a violation of due process that should concern every American. I was proud to join my Republican colleagues on the House floor this week to condemn the Democrats for their political theater. Click here or on the image below to view my remarks in Congress.

Reminder: Drug Take Back Day

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is coming up tomorrow on October 26, 2019, where you and your family can return unused, unwanted, or expired prescriptions to a variety of participating sites including police stations or your local CVS.

Studies show the majority of abused prescription drugs are found in home medicine cabinets, often leading to tragic and deadly unintended consequences. Earlier this year, over 450 tons of unused drugs were collected nationally, saving hundreds of lives. If you have unused medication at home, please visit takebackday.dea.gov to find the collection site closest to you.

In God we trust,
