Remembering the Fallen

Though our remembrance celebrations look different on this Memorial Day weekend, we pause to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. I pray we all take a moment to reflect upon the sacrifices of these heroes, so their memory may live on and their legacies are never forgotten.

Texas has a rich legacy of men and women who have given their last full measure of devotion in the name of Freedom. From Valley Forge to Vietnam, from Kuwait to Kandahar, from Berlin to Baghdad, our fallen Texans are a testament to duty, valor and commitment.

I ask you to join with me and make time for a moment of prayer and reflection. If you gather with your family, share the importance of this day with your children and loved ones. Say the names of those we have lost so their memory may continue to inspire future generations, never taking for granted the freedom and liberties they so valiantly fought to preserve.

George Patton once said, "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived." May we always be thankful, and may we always remain a grateful nation. May God be with the families of our fallen, and may He continue to bless the United States of America.

SMALL BUSINESS RESOURCES

I had the opportunity to join thousands of small business owners this week for another live Telephone Town Hall discussing resources available for employers and employees during COVID-19. I want to especially thank Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Executive Director Ed Serna for graciously making time to help answer questions and provide resources from TWC. If you were unable to join the call, you can listen by clicking here or on the photo below.

AGRICULTURE RELIEF

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced they will begin accepting applications on May 26 for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) to provide payments directly to farmers and ranchers hurt by COVID-19. Our Texan farmers and ranchers continue to work around the clock every day of the year, despite facing extraordinary challenges due to the pandemic. Their spirit of determination and resiliency will pull us through this crisis and I am grateful for the tireless hours they put in to keep food on our tables.

EXPANDED TESTING IN RURAL AREAS

Greater testing is key to beating COVID-19 and reopening our economy safely. This week the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that Texas' 303 Rural Health Clinics will receive nearly $50,000 each to be used for COVID-19 testing and related expenses, including implementing testing programs, supplies for testing, training staff on testing procedures and reporting data to HHS. I'm proud to secure this funding in the Paycheck Protection and Health Care Enhancement Act so our rural areas have the resources needed to protect our communities.
