Congressman Williams Against Tying Debt Ceiling Increase to Hurricane Harvey Relief

September 6, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Roger Williams (R – Austin), released the following statement Wednesday in opposition to indications that funding for Hurricane Harvey relief will be packaged with a debt ceiling increase:

"Texans experienced firsthand the devastating power of Hurricane Harvey less than two weeks ago. Millions of Americans have been displaced from their homes and have no livable housing to return to. I strongly support the need for immediate disaster relief and am disappointed there has been mention of combining this critical funding with a debt ceiling increase. I have opposed a debt ceiling increase every time it has come up for a vote, and with the direction this is moving in, I am heavily opposed to lumping these two separate issues together. I will stand firmly in support of relief efforts for the victims of such terrible devastation in Texas and Louisiana and I will continue to advocate for the separation of these two pieces of legislation."
