Rep. Williams Joins Fort Hood Soldiers at Calif. Training Center

March 1, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Roger Williams’ (R – Texas) recent visit to Fort Irwin National Training Center in San Bernardino County, Calif. allowed him to meet with U.S. Army leadership and observe Fort Hood’s 3rd Cavalry Regiment train for an upcoming deployment overseas.

“In the midst of so much uncertainty in the world I am thankful that our nation has such dedicated soldiers working so hard to protect us,” said Williams. “It is imperative that we give these brave men and women the resources they need to ensure they remain ahead of the enemy when they take the fight overseas.”

During the weekend of February 20, base commander Major General Joseph Martin hosted Congressman Williams’ tour of Fort Irwin. The California army installation features training facilities and a climate that imitate the environment soldiers are exposed to when combating terrorism abroad.

Williams witnessed a training simulation that pitted the Fort Hood based soldiers against Fort Irwin’s 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. The realistic training consists of all aspects of planning and execution of a battle.

“This is the kind of training that makes America’s soldiers the greatest in the world,” said Williams.

Williams was able to spend time with Fort Hood soldiers who explained the Fort Irwin simulation was the culmination of previous exercises. They described it as their “Super Bowl.”

“Our service men and women are very capable, talented and dedicated to what they do,” said Williams. “The bottom line is that they believe in something bigger than themselves and that something is the protection and safety of the United States.”

Williams represents the 25th congressional district of Texas, which includes Fort Hood, in the U.S. Congress.
