WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Roger Williams (R-TX-25) released the following statement after voting NO on H.R. 1, Democrats' partisan election reform bill.
"H.R. 1 is the Democrats' concerted effort to strip the states' election authorities and handover complete control to the federal government. As a former Texas Secretary of State, I know that the Constitution clearly states that Texas, and Texas alone has the right to determine our election laws. The Democrats' attempt to nationalize our elections and make "pandemic-style" changes permanent is deeply troubling" said Congressman Williams. "Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have made their top priority of this 117th Congress maintaining their power in Washington D.C. while forcing hard working Texas taxpayers to bankroll political campaigns."
Additional background on H.R. 1, For the People Act:
H.R. 1 would add a 6 to 1 federal match for small dollar campaign contributions. This means for every $200 dollars a political campaign receives from an individual, the federal government would add an additional $1,200. This bill also expands the opportunities for fraud in our elections by preventing states from determining their own voter identification requirements, expanding the use of mail in ballots, and stripping state of the ability to draw their own Congressional districts. Additionally, this bill will:
- Allow first-ever federal funding of campaigns
- Nationalize elections and centralize administration in Washington, D.C.
-Impose liberal California voting methods on every state
-Expand mail-in voting without safeguards to protect ballot integrity
- Weaponize the Federal Election Commission (FEC)
- Increase vulnerabilities for foreign election interference
- Destroy the First Amendment
- Remove states' ability to decide how their districts are drawn
Congressman Roger Williams represents the 25th Congressional District of Texas and serves as a member of the House Committee on Financial Services and as Vice-Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee.
