Rep. Williams Statement on Fort Hood Review Findings

Dec 8, 2020
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. Congressman Roger Williams (R-TX-25) today released the following statement after the findings of the independent review of Fort Hood were made public:

“Today, Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy released the findings and recommendations from the independent review of the climate and culture on Fort Hood that he commissioned in late July. I offered my full support for this review in July, entrusting the five civilian experts tasked with surveying the command climate of the installation to issue a report that identifies the root cause of the issues on Fort Hood and offers actionable recommendations for improvement. Prior to release this morning, I discussed the findings with Undersecretary of the Army Jim McPherson. I am confident this report provides a detailed roadmap for lawmakers and the military leaders to engage in a much-needed dialogue on the current state of our nation’s most revered institution.

“Sexual harassment and assault are a problem in the military ranks. Today’s release of the independent panel’s findings determined that there were individuals within particular chains of command that did not live up to the Army’s values, and subsequently violated their commitment to care for their fellow Soldier. No servicemember, regardless of unit or assignment, should ever feel unsafe amongst their battle buddies, and our work continues to properly address the shortfalls identified this afternoon. As Congress and military leaders take action to address the recommendations in this report, we must continue honoring the legacy of SPC Vanessa Guillen and make changes that fully address the shortcomings of SHARP to protect every soldier.

“I would also like to call attention to the tremendous sacrifice that the Soldiers in this community have undertaken in order to defend the American people; our Phantom Warriors have answered the nation’s call without hesitation over nearly 20 years in the Global War on Terror. I will continue partnering alongside Fort Hood’s good neighbors to improve our community on and off base, and will continue to proudly represent this resilient and dedicated community in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Lastly, I’d like to make clear that my support for the Fort Hood community and the Soldiers assigned to the “Great Place” is resolute, and without compromise. While politicians hoping to incite outrage have been quick to demagogue and insult our Nation’s premier military installation and her selfless servants, I will not cave to such lazy politicization of such a serious issue. Instead, I will continue to be a part of the solution, putting forth policy recommendations and actionable improvements that will improve the safety and security of our Soldiers on post, and hold leaders accountable for their shortcomings where deserved.”
