Rep. Williams Urges Biden DOJ to Keep Drugs Off Our Streets
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25)sent a letterto Attorney General Merrick Garland criticizing the Biden Administration's plans to develop taxpayer funded "safe injection sites" for opioid users across the country. The full letter is available here.
"The opioid crisis has claimed hundreds of thousands of American lives, but that hasn't stopped the Biden Administration from putting in place measures that encourage continued drug use, rather than target the pervasive spread of illegal drugs in our communities," said Congressman Williams. "Creating safe havens for those suffering from drug abuse and dependency will only worsen the crisis that's plagued American families for decades, and will only embolden narcotic traffickers who profit off of addiction and death. I've been working diligently on solutions in Congress to bring an end to the opioid epidemic and secure the Southern border, which serves as a thoroughfare for narco-traffickers. Sadly, President Biden's open-border policies are making the problem worse, and liberal activists who want to normalize drug abuse do not reflect the millions of concerned citizens who strenuously oppose illegal narcotics and the use of tax payer dollars to facilitate addiction.
Instead of addressing the surge in deadly drugs pouring across our open southern border, this Administration's policies are exasperating the epidemic and destroying the potential and prosperity of future generations. Attorney General Garland must abandon any consideration of the federal government supporting these dangerous injections sites and adhere to his oath to uphold the rule of law and keep the American people safe."
Background:
This week the Department of Justice (DOJ) signaled it would consider supporting federal drug injection sites, locations where people can freely use heroin and other narcotics under supervision. Currently, states have the power to authorize injection sites, however federal authorities can interfere or object to these facilities under the Controlled Substances Act. President Biden and AG Garland's actions are a stark departure from the Trump Administration, who fought back against cities who instituted drug injection sites claiming they were in clear violation of federal law.
