Roger Williams: Give Law Enforcement the Tools They Need to Do Their Job

May 18, 2015

“The President of the United States is basing policy decisions on how things look rather than how things are.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Roger Williams (R-Texas) today released the following statement after President Barack Obama announced that he will ban the transfer of certain "militarized gear" and restrict the delivery of some riot equipment to local police departments.

"How hypocritical is it that during National Police Week, the president stood in front of the U.S. Capitol and told thousands of police officers that he supported them, but today he stripped them of the resources that keep them, and the communities they watch over, safe?" said Williams. "While we've seen Mr. Obama go back on his word time and again, the fact that the President of the United States is basing policy decisions on how things look rather than how things are is reckless, shameful and downright irresponsible.

"Yesterday Waco was delivered an unspeakable tragedy, and I am incredibly grateful that local and surrounding law enforcement were able to restore order. How can we expect police officers to protect the communities of Ferguson, Baltimore and Waco when it is more difficult for them to get the tools they need to perform their job?"

In April, Williams spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to commend law enforcement officers who restored safety and security to Baltimore after violent protests.
