Roger Williams Statement on Russian Airstrikes in Syria

October 1, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Roger Williams (R-Texas) today released the following statement after a spokesman for President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Thursday that Russia has carried out airstrikes "in coordination with the armed forces of Syria."

"While Secretary of State John Kerry can talk up Russian involvement in Syria as an ‘opportunity,' President Putin is conducting air strikes for the Assad regime and bombing the rebels that we support," said Williams. "As if U.S.-Russia relations could not be any more contentious, the Obama Administration has somehow once again allowed President Putin to expand Russian influence. From Ukraine, to Iran, to Libya and Syria, President Obama's complacent foreign policy in Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa has shifted the balance of power and undermined America's credibility on the world stage. The damage has been done. I pray this president will finally listen to experienced military advisers rather than rely on political allies and campaign operatives who have demonstrated time and again they hold positions for which they are unqualified."
