Congressman Williams’ Iran Oversight Bill Passes the House

Dec 15, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Roger Williams (R – Austin), who serves as the vice chairman of the Subcommittee on Monetary Policy and Trade, on the House Committee on Financial Services, introduced H.R. 4324, the Strengthening Oversight of Iran’s Access to Finance Act, which passed out of the House on Thursday with a vote of 252-167.

“I commend my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives, who casted a vote this morning in support of my bill, H.R. 4324, the Strengthening Oversight of Iran’s Access to Finance Act. This bill is not only important to U.S. financial institutions, but crucial to our national security. The United States of America should not be in the business of selling aircraft to the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. This legislation improves Congressional oversight on any licenses issued for the sale of aircraft to Iran, ensuring that the recipient of the aircraft can meet specifically outlined certifications.

“The Obama-era Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, better known as the Iran Nuclear Deal, allowed the Treasury Department to license the sale of commercial aircraft to Iran. These planes were not solely used to transport passengers across Iran and the Middle East, but in many cases used to transfer weapons and soldiers from Iran to Syria. While our brave men and women of the U.S. armed forces fight tirelessly across the Middle East, Iran uses American made aircraft to work against our own national security interests.

“This legislation is critically necessary, and today’s vote demonstrates the urgency with which we must address the hostile actions of the Iranian regime. I share these concerns with Senators Cruz and Perdue, who introduced companion legislation in the U.S. Senate last month. The time is now to send a strong statement to the Ayatollah, so he may know that painting ‘death to Israel’ and ‘death to America’ upon your bombs, will not be rewarded with new airplanes and spare parts.”
