WASHINGTON — Just the word fundraising elicits groans or slumped shoulders from most politicians. It's drudgery for them — a despised but necessary task.
But U.S. Rep. Roger Williams of Austin, a lifelong salesman and an old hand in Texas fundraising, is an exception.

"I'm one of those weirdos that lives to raise money," Williams said. "I've been in this business forever."

So when colleagues approached him to be the new chairman of the House Conservatives Fund, a political action committee for conservative candidates, Williams jumped at the opportunity.

In 1939 a man started a car dealership to realize the American dream. When he died the ownership of the business was passed along to his son and so was a death tax liability equal to a significant value of the business' worth.
The son nearly declared bankruptcy.

Fortunately, he was able to pull the resources together to keep his father's dealership afloat. He still runs the dealership to this day and has more than 100 employees.

That son is me.

The U.S. Army on Thursday approved additional benefits for soldiers who were wounded in the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting.

The service also announced it would award the Purple Heart to a soldier who was killed and another who was wounded in an attack by a radicalized Muslim in 2009 at a recruiting center in Little Rock, Ark.

Last Friday the III Corps and Fort Hood commander hosted a ceremony to award the Purple Heart and Defense of Freedom medals to the victims of the November 5, 2009 attack on Fort Hood.

In total, 47 medals were presented to both military personnel and civilians during an emotional ceremony that recounted the horrific events of that awful day.

AUSTIN -- The oldest living U.S. veteran was honored on Wednesday with the presentation of an American flag that has been flown over the U.S. Capitol.

Congressman Roger Williams (R-Texas) will present 108-year-old Richard Overton with the flag at a ceremony on Wednesday. Williams will also congratulate Overton on receiving a new roof donated by Lon Smith Roofing.

"I'm really surprised, I appreciate every bit. I pray to God that they do live a long time and do it again for somebody else. Not only me, do it for somebody else, too," said Overton.
