The U.S. Army on Thursday approved additional benefits for soldiers who were wounded in the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting.

The service also announced it would award the Purple Heart to a soldier who was killed and another who was wounded in an attack by a radicalized Muslim in 2009 at a recruiting center in Little Rock, Ark.

AUSTIN -- The oldest living U.S. veteran was honored on Wednesday with the presentation of an American flag that has been flown over the U.S. Capitol.

Congressman Roger Williams (R-Texas) will present 108-year-old Richard Overton with the flag at a ceremony on Wednesday. Williams will also congratulate Overton on receiving a new roof donated by Lon Smith Roofing.

"I'm really surprised, I appreciate every bit. I pray to God that they do live a long time and do it again for somebody else. Not only me, do it for somebody else, too," said Overton.

Roger Williams, a two-term congressman from the Dallas suburbs and longtime GOP fundraiser, will be the new chair of the House Conservatives Fund, a federal political action committee that's been practically dormant for several cycles. The 65-year-old Williams, who cut his political teeth as a fundraiser for George W. Bush's gubernatorial and presidential runs, says he plans to be a major fundraising force in the 2016 House races.

A Texas congressman is lobbying to award the Medal of Honor to Chris Kyle, whose life and military career were the subject of the book and blockbuster film American Sniper.

Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, on Thursday introduced the Chris Kyle Medal of Honor Act, a bill that would "authorize and request" President Obama to award the nation's highest military honor to the Navy SEAL for acts of valor during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Murdered Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, whose autobiography "American Sniper" became a Hollywood blockbuster, could get the nation's highest military award under a bill introduced Thursday by a lawmaker from his home state of Texas, Fox News has learned.

Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, introduced legislation that, if passed, would authorize President Obama to bestow Kyle with the Medal of Honor posthumously.

Despite the strong lobbying efforts by President Barack Obama and his administration, one local lawmaker remains skeptical about taking military action in Syria.

In comments made to the Herald on Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Roger Williams, R-Austin, indicated that he was not in support of the president’s call for a military strike against the Syrian government.

“Right now I’m not leaning toward sending our young men and women into harm’s way,” Williams said.

Members of Congress said this week they’ll renew a push to designate the November 2009 Fort Hood shootings as part of the battle against terrorism, which would make the victims eligible for Purple Hearts and open up more benefits for those killed or wounded.

The Obama administration has designated the deadly attack as an act of “workplace violence,” rejecting critics who note that convicted shooter Nidal Hasan, an Army major and psychiatrist, openly acknowledged his ties to radical Islamist elements as his motivation.
