WASHINGTON, D.C. Congressman Roger Williams (R-TX-25) today released the following statement after voting against Democrats' resolution to implement "voting by proxy" (H.Res. 965) in the House of Representatives:

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure Friday to temporarily allow both remote voting by proxy and official remote committee proceedings during the coronavirus pandemic.

The nearly party-line vote, 217 to 189, means that a member present at the Capitol would be able to cast a vote on behalf of up to 10 absent colleagues.

The pandemic has raised concerns about having lawmakers gather to vote, particularly since many members of Congress are older than 60 and therefore more vulnerable to serious illness caused by the virus.

WASHINGTON, D.C. Congressman Roger Williams (R-TX-25) joined his colleagues in introducing the Protecting Life in Crisis Act (H.R. 6742) to prevent federal funds allocated in COVID-19 response legislation from being used for abortions or abortion coverage. The bill extends existing Hyde Amendment protections to any coronavirus health care provisions, and prevents federal tax credits from being used to cover post-employment health care premiums (COBRA) that include abortion coverage.

AUSTIN, TX Congressman Roger Williams (R-TX-25) today announced $2,218,043 in grants awarded to Austin Area health centers by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The funding, allocated in the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act, is intended to cover expenses to expand testing, purchase PPE, train staff, administer tests, carry out laboratory services for tests and expand drive-thru testing sites.

In mid-March, at the recommendation of the Center for Disease Control (CDC), state and local governments across America took unprecedented action to prevent and mitigate the spread of COVID-19. They imposed restrictions on travel, commerce and public gatherings in a concerted effort to prevent our healthcare systems from being overwhelmed. By most metrics, the draconian measures served their intended purpose, but the economic repercussions were a devastating cost to pay.
