They were back on the field Wednesday.

Less than a year after being shot at during their last baseball practice, the Republican Congressional Baseball team got back to work.

Wednesday was the first time since last year's tragic shooting — when an Illinois man who belonged to anti-Republican groups fired about 200 rounds at the team, pinning them for five or 10 minutes under gunfire — that the team returned to the Eugene Simpson Field for practice.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Roger Williams (R – Austin), who coaches the Republican Congressional Baseball Team, and sustained an injury during the shooting on June 14 2017, returned to Eugene Simpson Field this morning for the first practice of the season.

U.S. Representative Roger Williams (R) announced Friday that Fort Hood had received $117.4 million in barracks funding for 10 Rolling Pin barracks renovations.

Rep. Williams said the funding, which will allow for upgrades and repairs to a total of 746 living spaces in the 10 barracks, marked a step in the right direction for the military installation.

"These brave men and women put their lives on the line for our nation, and the last of their concerns should ever be the living conditions that they return to each night," Rep. Williams said in a press release.

The Republican congressional baseball team will return to Simpson Field in Alexandria, Virginia, for its first practice after last year's shooting.

The practice is at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25. The team, managed by Rep. Joe L. Barton, will hold a press conference at 7:30 a.m.

It was also historic for the city of Houston.

"This is the first time at least in my memory that we have had four presidents in Houston. I can't recall another time," said Mark Jones, a political historian at Rice University's Baker Institute.

Several area residents and officials commented on the passing of former First Lady Barbara Bush, a woman who's appeal transcended partisan politics. Bush, 92, passed away Tuesday.

On Sunday, family spokesman Jim McGrath said the former first lady had decided to decline further medical treatment for health problems and focus instead on "comfort care" at home in Houston. She had been in the hospital recently for congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
