ALEXANDRIA Va. — A year ago, a gunman shattered the tranquility of a spring baseball practice in this leafy Washington suburb, sending members of Congress diving into dugouts and leaving House Majority Whip Steve Scalise grasping for life on a blood-soaked infield.
On Wednesday, Republicans returned to the scene of the carnage to pay homage to the police officers who saved lives that day and — in a spirit of resilience — to once again play ball.
"I thought it was important to show the world we're not going to be deterred," said Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.).
Republican congressional baseball coach Roger Williams hit infield practice Wednesday morning as Rodney Davis played catcher and Williams staffer Zack Barth backed them up around a flooded batter's box.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — On a drizzly, gray morning after a trying year, the Republican congressional baseball team kicked off its season Wednesday.
Last June, a lone gunman opened fire on the unsuspecting lawmakers at practice, one day before their annual charity game against Democrats, wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and several others before being shot by police.
They were back on the field Wednesday.
Less than a year after being shot at during their last baseball practice, the Republican Congressional Baseball team got back to work.
Wednesday was the first time since last year's tragic shooting — when an Illinois man who belonged to anti-Republican groups fired about 200 rounds at the team, pinning them for five or 10 minutes under gunfire — that the team returned to the Eugene Simpson Field for practice.
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Roger Williams (R – Austin), who coaches the Republican Congressional Baseball Team, and sustained an injury during the shooting on June 14 2017, returned to Eugene Simpson Field this morning for the first practice of the season.
U.S. Representative Roger Williams (R) announced Friday that Fort Hood had received $117.4 million in barracks funding for 10 Rolling Pin barracks renovations.
Rep. Williams said the funding, which will allow for upgrades and repairs to a total of 746 living spaces in the 10 barracks, marked a step in the right direction for the military installation.
"These brave men and women put their lives on the line for our nation, and the last of their concerns should ever be the living conditions that they return to each night," Rep. Williams said in a press release.
The Republican congressional baseball team will return to Simpson Field in Alexandria, Virginia, for its first practice after last year's shooting.
The practice is at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25. The team, managed by Rep. Joe L. Barton, will hold a press conference at 7:30 a.m.
HOUSTON - Family, friends and dignitaries from around the world made Saturday's funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush an unprecedented celebration of life.
It was also historic for the city of Houston.
"This is the first time at least in my memory that we have had four presidents in Houston. I can't recall another time," said Mark Jones, a political historian at Rice University's Baker Institute.
