Dear Texans,

It's hard to believe the that just 10 months ago, an armed gunman opened fire at our congressional baseball practice one morning. Despite that horrific event, it was comforting to be back on Simpson Field with my teammates for the first time this season. As coach, I knew we had to go back there and show the world that we are strong, and that we will not be succumb to fear. We've got a lot of work to do before the game, but I'm confident that we'll pull out a win this year.

OAKALLA — The National Mounted Warfare Foundation hosted its fourth annual Homecoming for Heroes event to benefit the National Mounted Warrior Museum project on Saturday at the SC River Ranch in Oakalla.

"(The museum) is going to honor the soldiers, their families, local civilians and the veterans and everyone who has had a role in the buildup of Fort Hood," said retired Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk, the president and CEO of the Mounted Warfare Foundation.

Funk said the museum would serve as a destination activity for Central Texas.

ALEXANDRIA Va. — A year ago, a gunman shattered the tranquility of a spring baseball practice in this leafy Washington suburb, sending members of Congress diving into dugouts and leaving House Majority Whip Steve Scalise grasping for life on a blood-soaked infield.

On Wednesday, Republicans returned to the scene of the carnage to pay homage to the police officers who saved lives that day and — in a spirit of resilience — to once again play ball.

"I thought it was important to show the world we're not going to be deterred," said Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.).

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — On a drizzly, gray morning after a trying year, the Republican congressional baseball team kicked off its season Wednesday.

Last June, a lone gunman opened fire on the unsuspecting lawmakers at practice, one day before their annual charity game against Democrats, wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and several others before being shot by police.

They were back on the field Wednesday.

Less than a year after being shot at during their last baseball practice, the Republican Congressional Baseball team got back to work.

Wednesday was the first time since last year's tragic shooting — when an Illinois man who belonged to anti-Republican groups fired about 200 rounds at the team, pinning them for five or 10 minutes under gunfire — that the team returned to the Eugene Simpson Field for practice.
